Please be assured that Jewish Student Chaplaincy Scotland (JSCS) is still around and working to help all Students at University and colleges of further education- if you have any problems or issues of any sort that you would have contacted Aharon or Hodaya (our Chaplaincy couple ) please now contact us directly either

A Message with Love from your Jewish Chaplains – Aharon and Hodaya

We really hope you and your family are well at this difficult time. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the COVID-19 outbreak and we pray for a speedy end to the crisis.

Thank God, we are in good health, but we have an update to share with you, which is that we’re not able to work at the moment. It’s not what we would have wanted, but our parent body and employer, University Jewish Chaplaincy (UJC), has made this decision in the best interests of all chaplains and to secure the long-term future of the organisation. We know that you will share our disappointment with this arrangement, but we know that UJC have taken responsible steps in unprecedented times after a great deal of thought.

That said, please be assured that we still care very deeply about every one of our students. We are thinking of you and although we aren’t able to work as usual.

We are already thinking about exciting post-corona programming ideas and we are looking forward to returning to normality as soon as possible.

Exchange students – it was amazing to get to know you! We hope you enjoyed your time in Scotland and learned to love this place like we did.
The rest of you – we hope to see you all again, and much more, next term and thank you all for helping us in our first year in Scotland. Good luck to all new Jsoc committees, those who where already elected and those who would be elected in the near future.

Shabbat is a time of celebration, and we encourage everyone to celebrate in their own ways!

Giffnock Shul invites everyone to bring in Shabbat as a community with a special Kabbalat Shabbat gathering, taking place on Zoom, where we will join together in song, spirit and prayer. We will conclude Shabbat together with a communal virtual Havdallah ceremony. These experiences are open for all Jews across Scotland and beyond, regardless of shul membership, and are free of cost.

 

Kabbalat Shabbat will take place on Friday, April 3rd at 7:00 pm (sharp) with Rabbi Rubin

 

Havdallah will take place on Saturday, April 4th at 9:15 pm (sharp) with Rabbi Rubin, Rabbi Lemberger and Rabbi Lifschitz

 

These meetings will take place on an online platform called Zoom. There are several ways for you to access it:

Jewish Student Chaplaincy Scotland is our new name, but as NRCB and NRJC we have been providing support and advice for Jewish students in Scotland since the 1960s.

Jewish Student Chaplaincy was pioneered in Scotland. In 1969, Rabbi Michael Rosin was asked by students in Northern Region to become their Honorary Chaplain.

A recent National Jewish Student Survey found that students studying in Scotland are more likely to have experienced anti-semitism.  Jewish student views straddle the spectrum of political and religious opinion and the Chaplains and Members of the JSCS Board work with University Authorities and students to ensure that they, the students, are free to study and socialise in a safe and constructive atmosphere.

Chaplaincy support for Jewish students in Scotland is more vital than ever please help support us in this work by making a donation.

Our  Chaplaincy couple (Hodaya and Aharon Lemberger) cater their events for many different crowds around the country. They have one off social events around the Jewish and student calendars from ‘Welcome to Campus’ events to Chanukah parties to summer BBQs. They host Shabbat and Festival meals as well as midweek meals, endless coffees and visits to the pub! They join and support the Jewish Societies in their events and regularly meet students on a 1:1 basis and be there as ‘the people to go to’ if they have any problems.

They run weekly classes and sessions where they teach and learn anything from Jewish Thought to Talmud and very often – sometimes at the same time – will combine these with a fun event such as cupcake decorating, making pizzas, different arts and crafts – the list is endless – and always involve food and/or drink!

With the variety of events and classes we hope to provide for everyone.
